Additional Support for Learning

The Pathways Approach to Support for Learning in Edinburgh.

We support children with their learning in a variety of ways at Leith Primary using a staged intervention or Pathways based approach. Support for all pupils starts at Pathway 1 within the classroom and the universally available supports to all and any adaptations made or different work or resources planned by the class teacher, including small group work and timetabled extra help from an additional adult. Supports for pupils outside the classroom are considered as Pathway 2. These might be timetabled groups in another classroom or use of specialist resources or professionals such as the Educational Psychologist. Pathway 3 supports call upon the expertise of external agencies such as allied health professionals (CAMHS, Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy etc), Social Work and third sector groups (eg; Barnardo’s, Children First) and must be applied for after a GIRFEC Child Planning Meeting (CPM) is held.

In rare circumstances, Pathway 4 provision will be considered. In Edinburgh, Pathway 4 specialist provision can only be considered when it has been demonstrated that all supports within a mainstream school setting have been exhausted and it has been agreed with or requested by parents that a specialist school or class might better meet the needs of the child at that time. The final decision on a child’s suitability for specialist school is decided by the Education Placement Group who meet monthly to review Pathway 4 applications and the spaces available across the city’s very small number of special schools and classes. This decision cannot be made by the mainstream school Headteacher.
